When tackling the topic of trends, it's important to remember that although the market may be constantly changing, some trends are more classic than others and can withstand the test of time. All trends are inspired by culture and current events, and part of the fun is watching them evolve.
Here are some great trends for 2022, that can give a boost to any space!
1) Say goodbye to white and grey - Warm and sunny colors are making a big comeback. No matter what the era, colors play an integral role in any design. They can not only evoke emotion and influence how you see other colors and lighting in the space but can make a room or structure seem visually bigger or smaller. Using neutral tones as a base and adding pops of bright and vibrant colors are adding life back into what was a very long-lasting trend of strictly cool colors.
2) Bold Wallpaper - Many of my clients have a misconception when it comes to wallpaper. The old, outdated patterns, textures and colors that were in your Grandma's house, is what usually comes to mind. There are so many incredible new techniques and designs on the market now, from faux grass-cloth to beautiful vinyls for commercial spaces. Wallpaper can enhance even the most mundane space. When it comes to wallpaper, don't be afraid to take risks. It will be well worth the reward.
3) Concrete accents - I see this more and more when researching and selecting finishes for clients. Anything from countertops to flooring, furniture to wallpaper. In the right setting, it can give off a cutting edge industrial feel. Balance it with warm colors and textures, to round out the look.
4) Bringing nature in - Whether it be in your material finishes, artwork, planter accents or fabric prints, people are striving to bring the outdoors in. As the work force has evolved over the last couple of years, with more and more people having the capability to work remotely and/or from home, it seems only natural to want to make these spaces full of life. Introducing these natural elements into your design will be sure to enhance your space and boost your mood.
5) Multi-functional spaces - With the state of the housing market, I find more clients looking to make their existing homes work for them, instead of buying new. This means updating and upgrading, to make their space as versatile as possible. Removing or relocating walls, to create an open-concept floorplan or combining a guest bedroom and home office adds flexibility and longevity to your home.
6) Two-tone cabinets - This has been around for sometime, but following on the heels of the open-concept floorplan from #5 (multi-functional spaces), this seems to be gaining speed. Redesigning and revamping outdated kitchen layouts, is allowing for more clients to incorporate one-level, free-standing islands in accent finishes that compliment the perimeter cabinets. Top it off with a statement backsplash and some new decorative plumbing and lighting, to complete the look.
7) Smart homes - Integrated homes are no longer a thing of the future. You can set your alarm, adjust your thermostat, or open your front door with the click of a button. Having the ability to control your home automation and technology remotely, adds freedom and piece of mind to your already busy schedule. Some systems can even be installed without having to bring in a professional.
8) Outdoor living - Patio spaces have become just as important as indoor living spaces. As we continue to entertain more, updating your layout and replacing old patio furniture becomes a true extension of the interior of our homes. Add an outdoor rug and some smartly placed lighting to round out the ambiance.
9) Sculptural accent pieces - Playing it safe is a thing of the past. Adding unique pieces, like side tables and accessories in unusual shapes and finishes can be great conversation pieces. Have fun with the materials. The bolder the better.
10) Reinventing classics - Classic pieces never go out of style. Adding an antique chest or patterned wallpaper can bring nostalgia and substance to any room. These "classics" have withstood the test of time for good reason. Blending modern and traditional styles will add a timeless feel to any space.
