There are many factors to take into account when it comes to lighting design. The size of the space, the ceiling height, whether you want the light to be ambient or highlight a certain feature, among many others.
I always recommend starting with the size of the room. This will dictate the overall size of your fan or fixture and help you to narrow down your selections immediately. There are many online sources that can be easily accessed, and include these sizing guidelines.
I've included two examples below:

Most fixtures are available now with LED compatible bulbs. Although the initial bulb pricing is higher than a traditional incandescent, the life-span long outweighs the cost. LED bulbs also have no heat output, and can be dimmed (with a compatible dimmer switch). They come in a multitude of temperatures (ranging from warm white to daylight white) to give your space the exact look that you are going for.
When selecting a finish for a decorative light fixture, I always recommend coordinating instead of matching. Don't be afraid to blend metals or add pops of color and texture. A good balance is the key to any great design.
If you are looking for a more permanent lighting solution or are limited on ceiling height, recessed hi-hat lights are always a good option. My electricians have nicknamed the new hi-hats "mouse traps" because of the mechanism on the back that attaches them into the ceiling. With their slim profile, it makes installation a breeze, and they come equipped with a switch on the top that enables you to change the color temperature of your lights as well!
Happy hunting!
